RATS Residency and Crankie Show

I'm excited to be a Resident Artist at the Revolve Gallery for the month of November, sharing the space with my friend Jenny Fares of Sound Mind Design!
During this residency, I'll hang a 20’ long scroll of paper on the wall and add images to it until it’s a finished crankie. The images will be carved from rubber blocks and printed by hand, with one or two new blocks carved and printed each day. They will be a series of blind rat studies. The blind rats are all running towards a leader; a rat with one eye. At the end of the residency, I’ll pull the scroll off the wall, put it in a crankie box, and have a live crankie show using the finished print.
A rat king is a rare natural phenomenon where a group of rats become entangled by their tails. The phenomenon is believed to occur when rats huddle together in cold, confined spaces. Their tails can become tangled, and substances like dirt or food scraps can act as a binding agent, making the knot permanent. The rats become immobilized, unable to separate, and often die from inability to move or find food. This crankie is a metaphor, tying in with the axiom "in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king."
